Saludar stops Kurihara in 60 seconds, wrests OPBF bantamweight crown

Oct 13, 2023 8:15 am

Lightly regarded Froilan Saludar of the Philippines needed only 60 seconds to upset Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Keita Kurihara of Ichiriki Boxing Gym and wrested the title on Oct. 12 in Tokyo.

It was the chief supporting card for FEDELTA Presents TREASURE BOXING PROMOTION 4.

The technical knockout of the scheduled 12-rounder at Ariake Arena came 1 minute into the first round when Saludar dropped Kurihara with a straight right followed by a right uppercut. While Kurihara struggled to his feet to beat the count, Saludar floored him again with a hard right. Kurihara wobbled to his feet to beat the count again but was stopped by the referee when Saludar swarmed all over him immediately after the fight was resumed.

With the victory, the 34-year-old Saludar, ranked ninth in the division, improved his record to 34 wins, including 24 KOs, against seven defeats and a draw. For his part, the 30-year-old Kurihara, ranked third in the division by the World Boxing Council and fourth by the International Boxing Federation, impaired to a 17-8-1 win-loss-draw tally with 15 KOs.

Kurihara failed in his first defense of the title he recaptured in this past March.
