Okuda wins WBO female superflyweight title with technical decision over Yoshida

Tomoko Okuda of Mitsuki Boxing Gym captured the World Boxing Organization world female superflyweight title with a sixth-round technical decision over champion Miyo Yoshida of Misako Boxing Gym at the annex of EDION Arena Osaka on Dec. 13.

The end of the scheduled 10-rounder came 1 minute and 38 seconds into the round when Okuda’s cut above the right eye she suffered in the fifth round due to an accidental butt worsened. The referee stopped the bout, and the decision went to the three judges’ scorecards, who all scored in favor of Okuda.

The 37-year-old Okuda, the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation and Japanese female bantamweight ruler, scored a knockdown in the first round with a straight right to the head. Both boxers then fought almost evenly until the referee stopped the bout.

After the victory, Okuda said, ‘’Ms. Yoshida was the type of boxer I had imagined as she came forward.’’
With the victory, Okuda, known for being a high-school teacher, improved her record to seven wins, including a knockout, against two losses and as many draws. For her part, the 32-year-old Yoshida, who failed in her second defense of the title she won in June 2019, fell to a 14-2 win-loss record.
