Highly touted Kenichi Ogawa will take on eighth-ranked International Boxing Federation super featherweight Kazhihiro Nishitani in an all-Japanese nontitle match on Sept. 5 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, Ogawa’s Teiken Promotions said on July 31.
While Ogawa, ranked third by the IBF, had been scheduled to fight as the chief supporting card for the vacant World Boxing Organization flyweight championship bout between Japan’s Junto Nakatani and Giemel Magramo of the Philippines at the hall on Aug. 21, the bout was postponed indefinitely as Magramo’s visit to Japan became impossible due to Japan’s temporary entry restrictions on foreign passport holders in connection with the current novel coronavirus pandemic.
The 32-year-old Ogawa has 24 wins, including 18 knockouts, against a loss, a draw and one no contest, whereas Nishitani, 33, is ranked eighth in the division by the IBF, has a 21-4-1 win-loss-draw record with 12 KOs.
The bout between Ogawa and Nishitani would be one of the many all-Japanese matches to follow, considering the difficulties in inviting boxers from abroad until the coronavirus pandemic subsides in the world, exports believe.
