IBF world female atomweight champ Hanagata’s title defense put off until March 18

Jan 21, 2021 17:37 pm

The planned International Boxing Federation world female atomweight title match between champion Saemi Hanagata of Hanagata Boxing Gym and seventh-ranked Eri Matsuda of TEAM10COUNT was postponed to March 18 from the originally scheduled Feb. 26 due to the recent declaration of a new state of emergency, boxing sources said on Jan. 21.

This is as a result of Dangan professional boxing, an event organizer, having reshuffled the fight schedule in accordance with the government declaration to try to thwart the spread of the novel coronavirus.
But the fight venue will be at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall as originally planned, according to the sources.

It will be the 36-year-old Hanagata’s second defense of the title she captured in September 2018, while the 26-year-old Matsuda, who fought more than 30 bouts as an amateur, has four straight wins with one knockout after turning pro in August 2018.
