Wake, Oguni to clash on Apr. 28 to vie for right to challenge world S. bantamweight title

Jan 24, 2021 17:06 pm

Former International Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion Yukinori Oguni of Kadoebi Boxing Gym and former Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation kingpin Shingo Wake of Flare Yamagami Boxing Sports Gym will face on Apr. 28 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, boxing sources said recently.

According to the sources, the scheduled 10-round nontitle fight, dubbed ‘’SLUGFEST&DANGAN,’’ is widely regarded as a bout to decide a next challenger for a world title.

Both first fought in March 2013, and Wake stopped then OPBF champion Oguni in the 10th round to capture the title. After successfully defending the title five times, southpaw Wake fought Jonathan Guzman of Dominican Republic in July 2016 for the vacant IBF super bantamweight title only to lose in the 11th-round stoppage.

Meanwhile, Oguni dethroned Guzman in December 2016 but lost the title to Ryosuke Iwasa of Celes Boxing Sports Gym in his first title defense.

The 33-year-old Wake has a record of 27 wins, including 19 knockouts, against six losses and two draws, while the 32-year-old Oguni, currently ranked fourth in the division by the IBF, has a 21-2-1 win-loss-draw record with eight KOs.
