Nishida retains WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title with lopsided decision over Ohashi

Dec 20, 2021 9:50 am

Champion Ryosuke Nishida of Muto Boxing Gym pounded out a lopsided 12-round decision over 11th-ranked challenger Tetsuro Ohashi of Shinsei Boxing Gym and retained his World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific bantamweight title on Dec. 19 in Osaka.

It was the 25-year-old Nishida’s first defense of the title he wrested from former World Boxing Council flyweight champion Daigo Higa of Shisei Boxing Gym in April this year.

Fighting at Osaka City Sumiyoshi Kumin Center, both southpaws started out almost evenly. But Nishida, who was a former amateur boxer at Kindai University, began to land right-left combinations to the head and body from the third round and ended the fight on top. There were no knockdowns in the fight.

Nishida, who was fighting with his right wrist injury he sustained about a month ago, failed to land hard punches and settled for the decision victory. Nishida is undefeated in his five bouts, with one knockout. The 24-year-old Ohashi fell to an 8-3-1 win-loss draw record with two KOs.
