WBO flyweight champ Nakatani shows fine form in public sparring for Nov. 1 super flyweight bout

Oct 08, 2022 11:28 am

Undefeated World Boxing Organization flyweight champion Junto Nakatani of M.T Boxing Gym showed a public sparring at the gym in Kanagawa Prefecture on Oct. 7 in preparation for his 10-round super flyweight nontitle fight with Francisco Rodriguez Jr of Mexico, ranked second in the division by the WBO, on Nov. 1 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama Prefecture.

The 24-year-old Nakatani, who returned from his two-month training in Los Angeles on Oct. 4, went three rounds with his super bantamweight partner and dominated the sparring session by landing powerful straight lefts while occasionally switching from southpaw to orthodox stances to open up the partner’s defense.

Nakatani, who has 23 straight wins with 18 knockouts, learned this stitching technique during his U.S. training from L.A.-based noted trainer Rudy Hernandez.

After the sparring, Nakatani was asked whether he is aiming at conquering a super flyweight world title, he replied, ‘’Of course, I am aiming at attaining that.’’

Since Rodriguez Jr, who dropped a relatively close 12-round decision to WBO super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka of Shisei Boxing Gym in September last year, beating the Mexican in an impressive fashion would give Nakatani a major boost to his planned attempt at moving up to the super flyweight division, experts said.

Rodriguez Jr, a former WBO and International Boxing Federation minimumweight champion, has a record of 36 wins, including 25 KOs, against five losses and a draw.

‘’I am determined to have complete control over the former world champion, Nakatani added.
The fight will be held as one of the undercards of the title unification match between World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym and World Boxing Association light flyweight ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of Watanabe Boxing Gym.
