WBC champ Teraji shows public sparring for Nov. 1 title unification bout with WBA ruler Kyoguchi

Oct 15, 2022 10:39 am

World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym showed a fine form in a public sparring session at the gym in Tokyo on Oct. 14 before his planned title unification fight on Nov. 1 with World Boxing Association light flyweight ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of Watanabe Boxing Gym at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama Prefecture.

After going two rounds of sparring with Goki Kobayashi of Shinsei Boxing Gym before watchful eyes of several Watanabe gym members, the 30-year-old Teraji said, ‘’I am determined to show an overwhelming difference between us by putting pressure on him from the beginning. I think I can knock him out if things go as I have planned.’’

While Teraji suffered a loss for the first time to Masamichi Yabuki of Midori Boxing Gym and lost the title in September last year after successfully defending the title for eight times, Teraji recaptured the title in March this year with a one-punch knockout in their rematch. He has a 19-1 win-loss record with 11 KOs.

Teraji said, ‘’I think the fights (with Yabuki) broadened my range of boxing. I think I can now do both infighting and outfighting without much ado.’’

While Kyoguchi is regarded as a strong favorite according to an overseas bookmaker’s betting odds, Teraji brushed it aside by saying, ‘’It’s a good chance for betters to earn money by betting for me. Please make a bet on me. I think I can bet myself on me.’’

After doing sparring sessions in the United States in September, Teraji has been engaged himself in sparring with such top-notch Japanese boxers as former WBC flyweight champion Daigo Higa of Shisei Boxing Gym, Japanese bantamweight champion Seiya Tsutsumi of Kadoebi Boxing Gym and fifth-ranked Japanese bantamweight Tsubasa Murachi of Suruga Danji Boxing Gym.

‘’In the future, I want to conquer the titles of the all the four major sanctioning bodies,’’ added Teraji.
The 28-year-old Kyoguchi is undefeated in his 16 bouts, including 11 KOs. He first won the IBF’s minimumweight crown in 2017 and successfully defended it twice before moving up in weight to light flyweight. He won his second world title in 2018 and has successfully defended the title four times so far, including the last two overseas title defenses.
