Challenger Iwata decisioned by Gonzales in WBO light flyweight title match

Nov 02, 2022 1:33 am

Second-ranked World Boxing Organization light flyweight Shokichi Iwata of Teiken Boxing Gym dropped a unanimous decision to WBO light flyweight champion Jonathan Gonzalez of Puerto Rico on Nov. 1 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama Prefecture.

With the victory, the left-handed Gonzales made his second successful defense of the title he captured a year ago. There were no knockdowns throughout the 12 rounds.

Two of the three judges scored the fight 116-112 and the remaining judge had it 117-111, all in favor of the 31-year-old Gonzalez.

While the undefeated Iwata, 26, chased the fleet-footed Gonzalez most of the time, he could not land decisive blows. Technically accomplished Gonzalez did not run a risk and appeared to be satisfied with piling up points by landing straight lefts and left hooks at a crucial juncture.

In the final two rounds, Gonzalez, aware he is leading on points, visibly avoided exchanging blows as he moved side to side and ended the fight on top.

The fight served as the chief supporting card for the title unification fight between World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym and World Boxing Association light flyweight ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of the Watanabe gym.

After the fight, Gonzalez said, ‘’I am glad that I can show my style of boxing. Iwata is still young and has a lot of future. I want to fight the winner of Kyoguchi and Kenshiro in a title unification fight in the future in Japan.’’

With the victory, Gonzalez improved his record to 27 wins, including 14 KOs, against three losses and one no contest. For his part, Iwata has a 9-1 win-loss tally with six KOs.
