Teraji stops Kyoguchi in exciting world light flyweight title unification fight

Nov 02, 2022 1:35 am

World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing Gym, showing his speedy jabs and well-timed straight rights, stopped World Boxing Association light flyweight ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of Watanabe Boxing Gym in the seventh round in an exciting fight on Nov. 1 in Saitama Prefecture.

The Technical knockout of the scheduled 12-rounder at Saitama Super Arena came 2 minutes and 36 seconds into the round when the 30-year-old Teraji sent down Kyoguchi hard into the ropes by unleashing a devastating straight right, prompting the referee to stop the fight without bothering to count.

With the victory, Teraji also successfully defended his WBC title for the second time. It was the first title unification fight between Japanese boxers in 10 years. Then WBC minimumweight champion Kazuto Ioka of Ioka Boxing Gym and WBA ruler Akira Yaegashi of Ohashi Boxing Gym fought in 2012 for the title unification fight, in which Ioka won.

Teraji got off to a good start by sticking out left jabs while moving side to side. Kyoguchi, keeping his guard very tight, did not throw too many punches

After repeating this kind of boxing in a strained atmosphere, Teraji landed a well-timed one-two punch in the fifth round, putting the 28-year-old Kyoguchi on the seat of his trunks.

While Teraji swarmed over Kyoguchi by throwing punches, Kyoguchi suddenly rallied late in the round and landed a hard left hook to the head, which momentarily staggered Teraji who tottered along a little.
After both spent the sixth stanza cautiously, it was Teraji who unleashed a quick but hard straight right to the head of Kyoguchi, who was still under the influence of the accumulated damage, was dropped into the ropes.

Teraji said after the fight on the ring, ‘’I felt a little bit pressed. It was proved to be a good experience for me. Since (Jonathan ) Gonzalez (WBO light flyweight champion) won the fight (tonight), I want to face him for another title unification match.’’

With the win, Teraji improved his record to 20 wins, including 12 KOs, against a loss. For his part, the previously undefeated Kyoguchi fell to a 16-1 win-loss record with 11 KOs.
