OPBF champ Nagata decisions Kim in welterweight nontitle bout

Oct 11, 2023 10:00 am

Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super lightweight champion Daishi Nagata of Misako Boxing Gym hammered out a unanimous decision over former South Korean welterweight kingpin Kim Jin Su in a welterweight eight-round nontitle fight at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on Oct. 10.

Nagata (R) comes forward despite being hit frequently

There were no knockdowns in the fight. Nagata suffered a cut above the right eyelid due to the left-handed Kim’s straight left and was forced to backpedal owing to Kim’s left punches in the first round.

While Nagata, also left-handed, began to come forward from the second round, Kim resorted to clinches and was deducted a point for his frequent holding in the fifth round. But the 33-year-old Nagata managed to fend off Kim’s strong attack for victory.

With the wins, Nagata improved his record to 18 wins, including six knockouts, against three losses and two draws. For his part, the 27-year-old Kim fell to a 10-6 win-loss record with six KOs.
