Five people related to a pro boxing gym in Tokyo under the wing of the Japan Pro Boxing Association were found to have the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 as a result of PCR tests, the Japan Boxing Commission said on Nov. 7.

According to the JBC, two female pro boxers in her 40s and 20s and one male trainee in his 20s proved positive, respectively in the tests. Already, two male boxers of the gym tested positive in the tests on Nov. 2.

The female boxer in her 40s has been isolated at a hospital as she has a mild fever in addition to a sense of fatigue, while the boxer in her 20s has shown no symptoms and has been standing by at home. The male trainee has been isolated at a hotel as he has both smell and taste disorders.

JBC Secretary General Tsuyoshi Yasukochi said, ‘’If the similar things continue to occur, we will have no choice but to alter to the large extent the guidelines on the management of gyms and the resumption of boxing events. We would like to urge gym officials that they should reaffirm boxing is a contact sport and go far in the prevention of infection prevention within the gyms.
