Ex-world champ Oguni to return to ring on May 20, facing hard-hitting Kurihara

Mar 10, 2022 23:59 pm

Former International Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion Yukinori Oguni of Kadoebi Boxing Gym will face hard-hitting Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Keita Kurihara of Ichiriki Boxing Gym in a 10-round nontitle fight on May 20 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, according to the Kadoebi gym.

It will be Oguni’s first fight in three years since his planned bout with then OPBF super bantamweight kingpin Shingo Wake of FLARE Yamagami Boxing Sports Gym in April 2021 fell through due to Oguni’s right fist injury during training, which has been responsible for his long absence, boxing sources said.

Oguni, who will turn 34 on May 19, said, ‘’I appreciate very much for giving me a chance. Though my opponent is strong, I really want to make a comeback by winning the fight. Since many other boxers of my generation are going strong, I hope I can emulate them.’’

As for Kurihara, 29, he captured the OPBF bantamweight crown twice. While he lost the title to Takuma Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym in January 2021, he won the title again in October that year by decisioning Inoue’s stablemate Kazuki Nakajima. Inoue relinquished the title two months after he captured to concentrate on his world title challenge.

Oguni beat Jonathan Guzman of the Dominican Republic in December 2016 and became the IBF super bantamweight champion. But he lost the title to Ryosuke Iwasa of Celes Boxing Sports Gym in his first title defense in September 2017.

Oguni has a 21-2-1 win-loss-draw tally with eight KOs. Kurihara has a record of 16 wins, including 14 KOs, against six defeats.
