Ex-world champ Tomoki Kameda to have tune-up fight on Feb. 25 before world title challenge

Jan 05, 2023 18:45 pm

Former two-division world champion Tomoki Kameda of TMK GYM in Osaka will have a tune-up fight at the city’s ATC Hall on Feb. 25 to set the stage for his planned challenge to the World Boxing Association super featherweight title, currently held by Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan, gym officials said on Jan. 4.

According to the officials, the 31-year-old Kameda, a former World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion and a former World Boxing Council interim super bantamweight champion, will face Luis Castillo of Mexico in a featherweight ten-rounder.

If he clears the fight without any trouble, Kameda is expected to face the winner between Akhmadaliev and Marlon Tapales of the Philippines to be held this spring.

Kameda, popularly known as ‘’El Mexicanito’’ for he fought mostly in Mexico earlier in his career, is regarded as a designated challenger for the WBA title following his victory over Yonfrez Parejo of Venezuela in December 2012. He is currently ranked second in the division by the WBA.

Kameda said, ‘’I am glad the bout (with Castillo) was decided. I heard he has never been knocked out in his career. I want to knock him out cleanly rather than a landslide decision win because I am thinking about a world title challenge within this year and want to make an appeal to the WBA.’’

Kameda has a record of 39 wins, including 21 KOs, against three losses, while the 27-year-old Castillo has a 30-4 win-loss tally with 20 KOs.

Touching on undisputed bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym, who plans to move up in weight to super bantamweight this year, Kameda commented, ‘’ I don’t know at this point in time which title (of the four sanctioning bodies) he will first aim at. But if I become the WBA champion, and the timing is right for both of us, I want to face him. Anyway, I am concentrating on my fight in February first.’’

Kameda, who had said the difference of a weight division means a lot in terms of power, and used to say whether he (Inoue) can show the kind of power he displayed in the bantamweight division even at super bantamweight. Super bantamweight weight limit is 55.34kg while the weight limit of bantamweight is 53.52 kg.
