Once COVID-19-striken Linares resumes training for fight in U.S.

Aug 31, 2020 16:42 pm

Japan-based former three-time world champion Jorge Linares of Venezuela, who had been hospitalized in Tokyo for 10 days after he was found to be infected with the novel coronavirus through a polymerase chain reaction test on Aug. 6, started resuming a light training at his Teiken Boxing Gym in Tokyo on Aug. 31.

Linares, who had no symptoms but tested positive in the PCR test, had to cancel a planned bout on Aug. 28 with former two-division world champion Javier Fortuna of the Dominican Republic in Indio in the U.S. state of California.

The organizing body of the fight, Golden Boy Promotions, is expected to set a new date for the lightweight bout.

It appears Linares’ case of COVID-19 was not serious. But the Venezuelan, who turned 35 on Aug. 22, is likely to continue training at the Teiken Gym.
