Triple titleholder Yoshino retains his lightweight crowns

Sep 04, 2020 16:53 pm

Undefeated Shuichiro Yoshino earned a lopsided 12-round decision over compatriot Valentine Hosokawa to retain his Oriental-Pacific Boxing Federation, World Boxing Organization’s Asia Pacific and Japanese lightweight titles at the same time at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on Sept. 3.

It was the first time that three different titles had been at stake simultaneously in one fight.

With the victory, the 28-year-old Yoshino successfully defended the OPBF and WBO Asia Pacific crowns for the first time, while it was Yoshino’s sixth successful defense of the Japanese title.

Yoshino, ranked 10th by the WBO, and 14th by the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation, respectively, improved his record to 13 straight wins, including 10 knockouts. For his part, the 39-year-old Hosokawa, a former Japanese super lightweight kingpin, sagged to a 25-8-3 win-loss-draw record with 12 KOs.

Yoshino took control of the fight from the beginning and kept his pace throughout. His KO winning streak ended at eight, though.

After the bout, Yoshino told reporters, ‘’Since Mr. Hosokawa was a Japanese super lightweight champion and was strong as I expected. Although I staggered him, he could take a punch. But fighting for 12 rounds was a good experience for me. I want to take a crack at a world title at an early date.’’
