Ex-2-weight world champ Tomoki Kameda formally joins 3150 (Saiko) Fight Club

Mar 10, 2021 10:54 am

Newly opened boxing gym 3150 (Saiko) Fight Club in Osaka’s Nishinari Ward, run by former three-weight world champion Koki Kameda, said on March 9 that Tomoki Kameda, the youngest of the so-called three Kameda brothers, has formally belonged to the gym, the first professional boxer of the gym.

The 29-year-old Tomoki, who was a former World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion and a former World Boxing Council super-bantamweight interim kingpin, did not have a boxer’s license in Japan because his Kyoei Boxing Gym was adjourned in December 2019.

Tomoki, who last fought in July 2019 in Mexico by dropping a unanimous decision loss to the then WBC world super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas of Mexico in the United States.

Koki said, ‘’We want to have Tomoki have a fight in Osaka as early as possible, crack the world rankings and become a world champion again. Since it is difficult to invite a boxer from abroad at present (due to the coronavirus pandemic), we hope a have a super-bantamweight fight with a top Japanese boxer at an early date with purse of more than 10 million yen (about $92,100). We will look for a world title from among the world four major governing bodies within this year or next year at the latest.’’

Tomoki, dubbed ‘’El Mexicanito’’ for his long association with Mexico, has been living in Osaka since last August with his own family members.

‘’True there was a time when I was not involved in training for nearly a month. But I was studying other topnotch boxers’ techniques during that time, ‘’ Tomoki said. He did a sparring session at the new gym on March 8 and displayed a fine performance.
