Japan’s Sena Irie pounded out a 3-2 majority decision over Claudia Nechita of Romania in the women’s featherweight quarterfinals on July 28 and was ensured a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, the first medal for a Japanese female boxer in history. In boxing, there is no bronze medal match.
Fighting at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, the 20-year-old Irie started out fast by landing left jabs and a right hook to the head while moving to her left. The 27-year-old Nechita, however, rallied by connecting with an overhand right late in the round.
Irie, who had beaten her previous two opponents going into the day’s bout, clearly took the second round by landing one-two punches a few times.
Nechita came out strongly in the third and final round by showing everything she had in her arsenal while Irie tried to stop her by sticking out left jabs.
Irie will face Britain’s Karriss Artingstall, who also had a 3-2 decision over Skye Nicolson of Australia in one of the day’s quarterfinals, in the semifinals on July 31.
