Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation welterweight champion Ryota Toyoshima of Teiken Boxing Gym pounded out a unanimous decision over Shoki Sakai of Yokohama Hikari Boxing Gym and retained the title along with the World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific crown on Dec. 4 in Tokyo.
It was the 25-year-old Toyoshima’s second successful defense of the OPBF and his first WBO Asia-Pacific titles. Toyoshima added the WBO title last May by knocking out Yuki Beppu of Kurume Kushima & Yuki Beppu Gym.
There were no knockdowns during the 12-round fight at Korakuen Hall. Two of the three judges scored the fight 116-112 and the remaining one saw it 117-111, all in favor of Toyoshima.
Toyoshima started out fast and unleashed a barrage of punches from various angles to the head and body of the tight-guarded Sakai, who was not staggered throughout the fight.
While Toyoshima landed a hard left to the head in the final round, Sakai, ranked fifth by the OPBF and fourth by the WBO Asia-Pacific, took it as if nothing happened. Toyoshima later said with amazement, ‘’Normally that was a kind of punch my past opponents fell.
With the victory, Toyoshima improved his record to 15 wins, including nine KOs, against two losses and a draw. For his part, the 30-year-old Sakai, who made his professional debut in Mexico and fought mostly in the country until recently, fell to a 26-13-2 win-loss-draw tally with 14 KOs.
