Nasukawa gets shutout 8-round decision over Guzman in ’Prime Video Presents Live Boxing 5’

Kickboxer-turned Tenshin Nasukawa of Teiken Boxing Gym pounded out a shutout decision over Mexican bantamweight champion Luis Guzman in an eight-round bout at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena on Sept. 18.

The bout, held as the chief supporting card for ‘’Prime Video Presents Live Boxing 5,’’ was contested at the catchweight of 123 pounds. It was Nasukawa’s second bout as a professional boxer since making a successful professional debut in this past April.

The left-handed Nasukawa, 25 scored a knockdown in the opening round with a counter left. Guzman got up for a mandatory eight count.

While fleet-footed Nasukawa did not allow Guzman to hit him directly, Guzman continued to come forward, although the latter failed to land decisive blows.

Nasukawa also scored a light knockdown in the seventh round with a right hook to the temple. Though it was ruled a slip, it was changed to a knockdown between the rounds.

In the eighth and final round, Nasukawa occasionally changed his fighting style from left to right and landed various punches. The gusty Guzman did not lose his battling spirit and managed to survive the round. All three judges scored the fight 80-70 for Nasukawa.

After the fight, soft-spoken Nasukawa said, ‘’While I was able to get a knockdown, I failed to put an end to the fight. But I think Iwas able to show what I am doing now. I am determined to become a champion (world). So, please continue to root for me.’’

With the defeat, Guzman now has a record of 10 wins, including six knockouts, against three losses.
