Namiki loses to Bulgarian in women’s flyweight semifinals, settles for bronze at Olympics

Japan’s Tsukimi Namiki failed to advance to the final as she dropped a 5-0 unanimous decision to Stoyka Krasteva of Bulgaria in the women’s flyweight semifinals on Aug. 4 at the Tokyo Olympics and settled for a bronze medal.

Four of the five judges scored the bout 30-27 and the remaining one had it 29-28, all in favor of Krasteva.

Boxing at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, both southpaws circled to the right with Namiki, 22, throwing right hooks to the head with her rapid move. The 35-year-old taller Bulgarian, however, turned her longer reach to her advantage and landed right jabs several times. Namiki, who is 10-cm shorter than the 163-cm Bulgarian boxer, slipped downs a few times during physical struggles.

In the second round, Krasteva clearly took the round with right jabs and left hooks from the long distance. While Namiki, aware she is behind on points, tried to move in in the third and final round, The veteran Bulgarian boxer fended off Irie’s offense while landing her accurate punches occasionally.
