Iwata earns TKO win over Philippine’s Trinidad, eyes another world title challenge

Jul 07, 2024 13:58 pm

Top-ranked World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization light flyweight Shokichi Iwata of Teiken Boxing Gym, unleashing a barrage of left and right combinations, stopped top-ranked Philippine light flyweight Jahzeel Trinidad in the sixth round in a light flyweight nontitle fight on July 6 in Tokyo.

Iwata floors Trinidad

It was the 28-year-old Iwata’s fourth straight victory after unsuccessfully challenging WBO light flyweight champion Jonathan Gonzalez of Puerto Rico for the latter’s title in November 2022.

The technical knockout of the scheduled 10-rounder at Korakuen Hall came 1 minute and 10 seconds into the round when the 28-year-old Iwata landed the combination blows to the head and body by putting Trinidad against the ropes, prompting the referee to call off the fight. Immediately before, Iwata dropped Trinidad with a devastating left hook to the body, although Trinidad struggled to his feet to beat the referee’s count.

Iwata also scored a knockdown in the third round with a left uppercut for a mandatory eight count.

After the fight, Iwata said, ‘’I continue boxing to become a world champion and am determined to do it without fail.’’

With the win, Iwata improved his record to 13 wins, including 10 KOs, against a loss. It was the 26-year-old Trinidad’s first loss after winning his 11 previous bouts, six by KO.

Murata eyes title fight

In one of the undercards, fifth-ranked Japanese super bantamweight Subaru Murata of Teiken gym stopped the previously undefeated Bryan James Wild of the Philippines in the sixth round of a scheduled 10-rounder and extended his unbeaten streak to seven, all by KO.

The 23-year-old Wild now has a 12-1-1 win-loss-draw tally with six KOs.

Takami (R) attacks Tuolehazi

Top-ranked Japanese light flyweight Kyosuke Takami of Teiken gym hammered out an eight-round unanimous decision over veteran Wulan Tuolehazi of China in a light flyweight eight-rounder. There were no knockdowns in the fight.

With the victory, the 22-year-old Takami now has seven straight KOs, five by KO, while Tuolehazi, 31, sagged to a 15-7-2 win-loss-draw tally with seven KOs.
