Champion Mori retains WBO Asia Pacific title by stopping tenacious Tameda

Nov 28, 2020 18:30 pm

Undefeated Musashi Mori of Yakushiji Boxing Gym, unleashing a barrage of right-left combinations near the blue corner, stopped gutsy challenger Tsuyoshi Tameda of Ohashi Boxing Gym in the 11th round and retained his World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific featherweight title on Nov. 28 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall.

The technical knockout of the scheduled-12 rounder came 1 minute and 39 seconds into the round when southpaw Mori pummeled Tameda with his vaunted combinations. Shortly before that Tameda suffered a cut from the corner of his right eye and had to go through the ringside doctor’s check.

It was Mori’s third successful defense of the title he won from Richard Pumicpic of the Philippines in November 2018. With the victory, the 21-year-old champion extended his unbeaten streak to 12, including seven KOs, while Tameda, 27, fell to 21 wins, 19 by KO, against six losses and two draws.

After the fight, Mori said, ‘’I really wanted to win it more cleanly. But I couldn’t because Mr. Tameda had strong punches as his record shows. I knew he would come out aggressively from the beginning. Therefore, I had to use my footwork to wait until the right moment. I have a confidence in my stamina and physical property. I am ranked fourth in the division’s world ranking and am looking forward to challenging a world title in the near future though it would depend upon the degree of the impact of the COVID-19.’’
