Kyoguchi in joint training site in Sapporo, inclined to have WBA title unification fight

Jun 15, 2021 14:11 pm

Undefeated World Boxing Association light flyweight ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi and three other top boxers of Watanabe Boxing Gym held a joint press conference online on June 14 from their joint training site in Sapporo in Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido.

Kyoguchi, who retained his title for the third time on March 13 (14 Japan time) in Dallas in the U.S. by stopping Axel Aragon Vega of Mexico, said since he has been ordered by the WBA to face regular light flyweight champion Esteban Bermudez of Mexico to unify the titles, Kyoguchi is inclined to choose him around this summer ‘’since he is a designated fighter.’’

But World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Elwin Soto, also of Mexico, has recently signed a contract with sporting event promotions company Matchroom Boxing of England just like Kyoguchi, the fight with Soto cannot be ruled out completely.

Kyoguchi said, ‘’I am prepared for the both since they are both orthodox style boxers. For me, either fighter would be fine.’’

Included in the joint training camp in Sapporo, which was held between June 11 and 15, are former Oriental-Pacific Boxing Federation super featherweight champion Hironori Mishiro, former Japanese super bantamweight kingpin Yusaku Kuga and Japanese minimumweight ruler Masataka Taniguchi.

Mishiro said, ‘’I wanted to further develop my physical strength.’’ His next fight is expected to be around this September although his opponent has not been decided yet. While many fans expect him to face Shuichiro Yoshino, who holds titles in the OPBF, WBO’s Asia-Pacific and Japanese lightweight simultaneously, the clash with Yoshino is not likely to be made this time, according to sources close to Mishiro.
