Japan’s Namiki decisions Colombian boxer in flyweight quarterfinals at Olympic

Aug 01, 2021 19:19 pm

Japanese flyweight Tsukimi Namiki advanced to the semifinals as she pounded out a 5-0 unanimous decision over Valencia Victoria of Colombia, ensuring a medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Aug. 1. In boxing, there is no bronze-medal deciding match held. Her semifinal match will be held on Aug. 4.

With the victory, Namiki is trying to follow in the footstep of her compatriot and women’s featherweight Sena Irie, who will compete in the final on Aug. 3 after decisioning a British boxer on July 31.

Boxing at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, both southpaws exchanged fierce blows from the opening bell. But the fleet-footed Namiki, 22, landed rapid right-left combinations to the head at close range. All of the five judges scored the round 5-0 for Namiki.

Namiki’s speedy footwork befuddled her 32-year-old opponent, the bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, as she also connected with right-left hooks to Victoria, resulting in the five judges all giving 10-9 tallies for Namiki in the second round as well.

In the third and final round, Victoria came out strong, landing one-two punches. But Namiki, nothing daunted, rallied strongly while moving side-to-side rapidly and connected with an accurate left hook at a very close range to the head shortly before to end the round. She took the round 3-2 for her unanimous decision victory.
