Tokyo Olympics women’s featherweight gold medalist Sena Irie of Nippon Sport Science University beat her teammate Ami Matsumochi by referee stop contest (RSC) in the division’s final of the All-Japan amateur boxing championships on Nov. 28 at Tokyo’s Sumida City Gymnasium.

It was the 22-year-old Irie’s second such title since 2018. Irie started out fast landing a straight right to the head, which prompted the referee to issue a standing count. After the bout was resumed, Irie landed combination blows to the head and body, and the referee called off the match 1 minute and 15 seconds into the round. Irie was later chosen as MVP of the women’s boxing.

Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympics women’s flyweight bronze medalist Tsukimi Namiki of Japan Self-Defense Forces Physical Training School won the flyweight final to win the title for the first time.

In the men’s middleweight, Tokyo Olympian Yuito Moriwaki of JSDF Physical Training School captured the title for his fourth straight time.

All of the three former Tokyo Olympians said their next target is to win next year’s Asian Games in China’s Hangzhou.

Yuta Akiyama of JSDF Physical Training School, who won the men’s welterweight for the first time, was chosen as MVP for the men’s competition because of his impressive fighting style.
