Ex-2 division world champ Jhonny Gonzalez loses to Watanabe in nontitle fight in Seoul

Dec 04, 2022 9:59 am

Former two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez of Mexico dropped a 10-round majority decision to Takuya Watanabe of DANGAN AOKI Boxing Gym in a super featherweight nontitle fight on Dec. 3 in Seoul.

Fighting at Casino Hotel Paradise City in Incheon, the 41-year-old Gonzalez, a former World Boxing Organization bantamweight and former World Boxing Council featherweight champion, failed to land his renowned hard punches throughout the fight due to Watanabe’s tight guard and frequent left jabs.

With the defeat, Gonzalez fell to 69 wins, including 56 knockouts, against 12 losses and one draw. For his part, the 32-year-old Watanabe, the 12th-ranked Japanese super featherweight, improved his record to 39 wins, including 22 KOs, against 11 losses and one draw.

The fight served as the chief supporting card for the day’s nontitle bout between former WBO bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero of the Philippines and Ryo Akaho of Yokohama Hikari Boxing Gym.
