‘Monster’ Inoue to be presented with WBC/WBO super bantamweight title belts on Aug. 30 at Korakuen Hall

Aug 26, 2023 15:02 pm

Newly crowned World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’the Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym will attend a ceremony at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on Aug. 30, in which the WBC and WBO championship belts will be presented to him on the ring, the gym said on Aug. 25.

Inoue won the WBC and WBO super bantamweight titles on July 25 at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena with an eighth-round technical knockout over Stephen Fulton of the United States, becoming the second Japanese to capture the world titles in four different weight divisions. Current World Boxing Association super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka of Shisei Boxing Gym is the first Japanese to attain the feat.

In the day’s event entitled ‘’Phoenix Battle 103,’’ Japanese featherweight champion Keisuke Matsumoto of Ohashi gym will defend the title he won in April with top-ranked Nigerian Ridwan Oyekola of Okinawa’s Hiranaka Boxing School Gym. The fight will double as the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific featherweight championship fight.

Inoue’s cousin Koki Inoue of Ohashi gym will face Abdurasul Ismoilov of Uzbekistan for the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific super lightweight title fight as the chief supporting card.

In addition, Japanese bantamweight champion Seiya Tsutsumi of Kadoebi Boxing Gym will defend the title against second-ranked Japanese bantamweight Riku Mauda of Teiken Boxing Gym for his third defense of the title he captured in June last year.

The Tsutsumi-Masuda clash is also regarded as the semifinal match for the so-called ‘’Naoya Inoue Monster tournament.’’ Kazuki Anaguchi of Shinsei Boxing Gym will square off with Shori Umezu of Mitani Yamato Sports Gym in the other semifinal.

The winner of the tournament, which is scheduled in December, will take home the winner’s prize of 10 million yen (some 68, 300 dollars) aside from the usual pursue. The tournament was launched by Ohashi gym after Naoya Inoue unified the bantamweight titles of all the four major sanctioning bodies last December and relinquished all the titles earlier this year to move up in weight to super bantamweight.
