WBO champ Soto, Takayama, undercard of ‘Canelo’-Saunders fight on May 8

Apr 19, 2021 9:42 am

World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Elwin Soto of Mexico will take on former world minimumweight champion Katsunari Takayama of Neyagawa Ishida Boxing Club as one of the chief supporting cards for the highly touted super middleweight title unification bout between Saul ‘’Canelo’’ Alvarez of Mexico and Billy Joe Saunders of Britain on May 8 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, United States, organizers said on Apr. 17.

According to sporting event promotions company Matchroom Boxing of England, the 37-year-old Takayama, who had held world minimumweight titles of the sport’s all four major governing bodies at different times, returned to the professional world from amateur boxing after failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics by earning a decision over then world-ranked light flyweight Reiya Konishi of SUN-RISE Boxing Gym last December. He is currently World Boxing Association’s fifth-ranked light flyweight.

The 24-year-old Soto, making his third defense of the title he won from Angel Acosta of Puerto Rico in June 2019, has just recently concluded a contract with Matchroom.

In the light flyweight, WBA light flyweight ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of Watanabe Boxing Gym has also expressed his desire to face Soto because Kyoguchi also has a similar promotional contract with Matchroom.

In addition, World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji of BMB Boxing Gym will defend his title against Tetsuya Hisada of Harada Boxing Gym in Osaka on Apr. 24 for his eighth defense of the title.

With a series of these title fights in light flyweight division, the situation surrounding the 105-pound (47.62 kg) division is really heating up.
