COVID-19 forces highly touted Shimizu-Mori featherweight clash put off until May 21

Apr 30, 2021 12:10 pm

The battle between Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation featherweight champion Satoshi Shimizu and World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific featherweight kingpin Musashi Mori, initially planned on May 13, was put off until May 21 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall under the country’s third state of emergency due to a resurgence of the COVID-19, organizers said on Apr. 29.

Although no tickets for the scheduled 12-round title match will be generally sold, the fight between the 35-year-old Shimizu of Ohashi Boxing Gym, the bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, and the 21-year-old undefeated Mori of Yakushiji Boxing and Fitness Gym has been attracting a lot of attention.

Southpaw Shimizu, ranked 15th by the World Boxing Council, has a record of nine wins, all by knockout, against a loss, while Mori, ranked fourth by the WBO, has 12 straight wins, including seven KOs.
