Various world light flyweight battles thinkable now

May 11, 2021 14:06 pm

With the TKO victory of World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Elwin Soto of Mexico over veteran Japanese Katsunari Takayama of Neyagawa Ishida Boxing Club on May 8 in Arlington, Texas, for his third successful defense of the title as a trigger, the situation surrounding the 108-pound light flyweight division has become the focus of attention, according to boxing experts.

This is because the 24-year-old Soto concluded Matchroom Boxing of England, a sports streaming platform which is regarded as one of the world’s foremost promotion entities, this year, and World Boxing Association light flyweight ‘’super’’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi of Watanabe Boxing Gym is also affiliated with Matchroom.

Since the undefeated Kyoguchi, 27, stopped Soto’s compatriot Axel Vega last March in Dallas, Texas, to retain the title for the third time, it does not seem to be difficult to arrange their match.

Japan’s World Boxing Council light flyweight kingpin Kenshiro Teraji of B.M.B. Boxing gym, who retained his title for the eighth time by decisioning compatriot Tetsuya Hisada of Harada Boxing Gym in April, sets his eyes on unifying the light flyweight titles in addition to his long-standing desire to surpass the Japanese world title defense record of 13.

If Kyoguchi-Soto fight realizes, it is natural for Teraji to hope to fight the winner of the fight. Either that, or Teraji can take on International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Felix Alvarado of Nicaragua, whom Teraji was scheduled to face in December 2019.

The idea of the showdown between the winner of the Soto-Kyoguchi fight and that of the Teraji-Alvarado battle seems very enticing to say the least, the experts said.

Further, Takayama, who turns 38 on May 12, is still going strong as he demonstrated in his shadowboxing immediately after being stopped by Soto. He has no intention to hang up his gloves.

Further, hard-hitting Japanese light flyweight champion Masamichi Yabuki of Midori Boxing Gym, who is ranked by all the four world governing bodies, is nothing to sneeze at in this respect, they added.
