The Japan Boxing Commission and Japan Pro Boxing Associations agreed on July 6 that no professional boxers from abroad will probably be allowed to enter Japan until after Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics end on Sept. 5.
The agreement, made at the day’s bilateral liaison committee meeting fighting the novel coronavirus pandemic, came following the discussion between the JBC and Japan Sports Agency, which is very busy taking care of the acceptance of foreign players for the Olympics, according to informed sources.
The sources also said the JSA called for the upgrading of the ongoing guidelines on pro boxing, including the operation of fights. At present, antigen tests for chief trainers and referees are done on the very days of fights. JSA advised such tests should be conducted at the JBC-controlled weigh-in sites (at the JBC bureau for example) on a trial basis starting July 12.
Participating boxers receive PCR tests for COVID-19 one day before their bouts at present, which was reconfirmed.
Tokyo Olympics will be held between July 23 and Aug. 8. Tokyo Paralympics will be conducted between Aug. 24 and Sept. 5.
