World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific minimumweight champion Ginjiro Shigeoka of Watanabe Boxing Gym stopped third-ranked challenger Toshiki Kawamitsu of Misako Boxing Gym in the second round to retain his title on July 14 in Tokyo.

It was the 21-year-old Shigeoka’s second defense of the title he won in July 2019 by knocking out Clyde Azarcon of the Philippines in the first round for the vacant crown. Southpaw Shigeoka successfully defended the title on News Year’s Eve of that year.

Fighting at Korakuen Hall, Shigeoka decked the 25-year-old challenger in the second round with a right hook to the head at an extremely close range. While Kawamitsu wobbled to his feet to beat the referee’s count, Shigeoka swarmed all over him with a variety of punches, prompting the referee to step in to call off the fight 2 minutes and 5 seconds into the round of the scheduled 12-rounder.

With the victory, Shigeoka, who won five big amateur titles during his high-school days, extended his unbeaten streak to six, including five KOs. It was Kawamitsu’s first defeat after winning six straight bouts, including three KOs. Kawamitsu also has an ample amateur experience.
