Women’s featherweight Sena Irie of Nippon Sport Science University, who won the gold medal for the first time in history since the women’s boxing was launched in the 2012 London Olympics, said, ‘’I am really happy to win the gold medal at the Olympics. I hope to wind up my boxing career by winning the all-Japan championships (in December).’’

Tsukimi Namiki of Japan Ministry of Defense, who captured the women’s flyweight bronze medal, said, ‘’It’s a dream come true. I am overwhelmed with gratitude. But my ultimate aim is to try to do my best to become the No. 1 in the world.’’

Men’s flyweight bronze medalist Ryomei Tanaka, a teacher at Gifu Chukyo High School, said, ‘’l was happy that I was able to do training together with other members for the Olympics. I will take a rest for a while and will decide what to do in my future.’’

Meanwhile, Uchida revealed he sent a letter of protest to Tokyo Broadcasting System Television Inc. (TBS), complaining about its ‘’Sunday Morning’’ commentator Isao Harimoto’s remark to the effect that a woman before marriage should not fist another woman’s face (he was referring to Irie’s bout). What a sport! Harimoto’s comments have been take up big since then in social media.
