Ex-amateur star Tsutsumi decisions 5th-ranked OPBF featherweight in his pro debut

Jul 14, 2022 2:28 am

Former amateur star Hayato Tsutsumi of Shisei Boxing Gym hammered out an eight-round unanimous decision over fifth-ranked Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation featherweight Jhon Gemino of the Philippines in his professional debut on July 13 in Tokyo.

While highly touted Tsutsumi, 23, landed speedy straight blows to the head and body while moving swiftly, he failed to put his punches together and had to settle for the unanimous decision win at Ota City General Gymnasium.

Tsutsumi turned pro with a class-A license, a rare treatment for an amateur boxer turning pro, as he won as many as 13 amateur titles, including the all-Japan amateur championship in the bantamweight division in 2017 for the first time as a high-schooler since Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym.

‘’Though I wanted to show a kind of more impactful fight, To the chagrin of myself, I failed to do that. But I am determined to display a better fight next. So, please have a high expectation of my next fight,’’ Tsutsumi said after the fight.

With the loss, the 30-year-old Gemino has 23 wins, including 13 knockouts, against 14 losses and a draw.
The fight was held as an undercard of the World Boxing Organization world super flyweight title match between champion Kazuto Ioka of the gym and top-ranked challenger Donnie Nietes of the Philippines.
