Tsunami stops Narita in final round in WBA light flyweight challenger deciding match

Dec 10, 2022 11:52 am

World Boxing Association’s ninth-ranked female light flyweight Tenkai Tsunami of Yamaki Boxing Gym stopped the 10th-ranked Yumi Narita of Himeji Kinoshita Boxing Gym in the 10th round in the WBA light flyweight challenger deciding match on Dec. 9 in Tokyo.

The technical knockout of the fight at Korakuen Hall came 1 minute and 50 seconds into the 10th and final round when the referee stopped the bout without bothering to count when Tsunami severely staggered Narita with left hooks and a straight right immediately before the end of the fight.

The 38-year-old Tsunami, who was former WBA super flyweight champion as well as World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion, is expected to challenge the winner of the planned fight between WBA light flyweight super champion Jessica Plata of Mexico and her compatriot Maria Bautista who is a champion in recess in the division.

With the win, Tsunami improved her record to 19 wins, including 13 KOs, against 10 losses and a draw not counting the fights she had fought when Japan Boxing Commission did not recognize. Narita fell to a 6-5-3 win-loss-draw tally with one KO.
