‘Monster’ Inoue eyes title unification bouts at super bantamweight as well

Dec 15, 2022 11:32 am

Undisputed world bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’Monster’’ Inoue said on Dec. 14 in Yokohama he aims at unifying the world super bantamweight titles now that he has unified the bantamweight titles of all the four major sanctioning bodies.

Speaking before a group of reporters at Ohashi Boxing Gym, to which he belongs, Inoue said, ‘’I think I will fight at super bantamweight for the time being as I will aim at unifying the titles of the sanctioning bodies concerned. If such opportunities come soon, I won’t need any test for the title unification bouts, ‘’ thereby hinting at his desire to have a title unification bout directly and early.

At present, Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan and Stephen Fulton of the United States have a pair of the super bantamweight titles of the four sanctioning bodies, respectively.

Reflecting on his fight with former World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Paul Butler of Britain the previous night, Inoue said, ‘’I felt my opponent spent a lot of time strengthening his defense aspect so that he can avoid being hit by my favorite punches. If a world champion of all boxers sticks to that kind of defensive strategy, it can’t be helped. It was a difficult fight for me as well. I’m glad I was able to knock him out in the end.’’ Inoue earned an 11th-round KO win over Butler at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena.

The 29-year-old Inoue, who slept about three hours after the fight with Butler, said, ‘’It was the supreme night last night. When I see the four championship belts here, what I have come to achieve carries a lot of weight.’’

Asked about the fact that the arena was fully occupied with some 15,000 spectators, Inoue replied, ‘’When I was a world super flyweight champion, the usual venue of nearby Ariake Colosseum was not filled with that many spectators. But the number of spectators increased bit by bit, and the venue was full at last. I think what we have done so far was correct.

‘’When I move up to super bantamweight, I can’t take my eyes off each fight. Spectators will also watch my fights that way. There will be more thrilling fights, ‘’ Inoue predicted, adding his fighting style will have to change because the physical size of his opponent become bigger.

In this connection, Inoue responded to a query that Manny Pacquiao (Pac Man) increased his sense of stability as he moved up in weight by saying, ‘’True, if you move up in weight, your fighting stability may increase. Since I had some difficulty in reducing my weight for the fight last night, my sense of stability was not perfect.’’
