Nery clears official weigh-in for May 6 fight at Tokyo Dome

May 05, 2024 19:49 pm

The World Boxing Council’s top-ranked super bantamweight Luis Nery of Mexico tipped the scales at 54. 8 kg (121 lbs), some 500 grams under the super bantamweight limit in the official weigh-in held at a Tokyo hotel on May 5, setting the stage for his challenge to undisputed world super bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym for the latter’s titles on May 6 at Tokyo Dome.

Inoue (L) to clash with Nery tomorrow

A lot of attention was focused on Nery’s weight as he previously failed to meet his weight limit in his challenge to then WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka of Teiken Boxing Gym for the latter’s title in March 2018. Though Nery stopped Yamanaka in the second round, the title was left vacant in accordance with relevant regulations.

Inoue weighed in at 55.2 kg (121.75 lbs). The super bantamweight limit is 55.34 kg (122 lbs).

The left-handed Nery, 29, has 35 wins, including 27 knockouts, against a loss. For his part, the 31-year-old Inoue has 26 straight wins, 23 by KO.

The Inoue-Nery fight will serve as the main event of four world title fights at the dome dubbed ‘’Prime Video Presents Live Boxing 8’’.

It will be the first time that a boxing event will be held at the dome since the world heavyweight championship fight between Mike Tyson and James ‘’Buster’’ Douglas, both of the United States, in February 1990.
