Nagata decision’s Kim, retains WBO Asia-Pacific super lightweight title for 1st time in Seoul

The World Boxing Organization’s Asia-Pacific super lightweight champion Daishi Nagata of Misako Boxing Gym scored a knockdown in the final round and earned a 12-round unanimous decision over South Korea’s Kim Yong Wook on June 7 in Seoul.

It was the 34-year-old Nagata’s first successful defense of the title he captured from Koki Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym last February.

While Nagata is also the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super lightweight champion, that title was not at stake.

Fighting at Seoul’s Fashion Center Event Hall, both southpaws could not land decisive blows most of the rounds. In the final round, Nagata landed a right jab to the head immediately before the end of the round, putting the fifth-ranked Kim on the seat of his pants. Kim beat the count and the bell ending the round sounded.

With the win, Nagata improved his record to 20 wins, including six knockouts, against three defeats and two draws. For his part, it was the 28-year-old Kim’s first defeat after winning his first six bouts, including five KOs.
