World Boxing Association female flyweight champion Naoko Fujioka of Shinji Takehara and Takanori Hatakeyama Boxer Fitness Gym pounded out a majority decision over sixth-ranked Sulem Urbina of Mexico and retained her title in Los Angeles California on July 9 (July 10 Japan time).

But her compatriot and World Boxing Organization female light flyweight champion Tenkai Tsunami of Yamaki Boxing Gym, simply known as ‘’Tsunami,’’ lost to WBA minimumweight champion Seneisa Estrada of the United States in a lopsided fashion.

Fighting at the Banc of California Stadium neither Fujioka nor Urbina failed to land decisive blows throughout the 10-round fight. But it was Fujioka who pressed forward all the way targeting at her opponent’s body.

While one of the three judges scored the fight 95-95, the remaining two judges had it 99-91, 96-94, respectively, all in favor of Fujioka, Japan’s only five-division world champion. It was Fujioka’s third successful defense of the title she won in March 2017.

With the victory, Fujioka, who will turn 46 in August, improved her record to 19 wins, including seven knockouts, against two losses and a draw. Urbina, 31, fell to a 12-2 win-loss record with two KOs.

Meanwhile, Tsunami failed to defend her title as she dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to undefeated Estrada in the fight held also at the stadium. Two of the three judges scored the fight 98-92 and the third one had it 99-91, all for the American.

While physically bigger Tsunami occasionally landed big right-hand punches, the agile Estrada, moving side to side quickly, threw combination blows in rapid succession. Estrada occasionally switched to a southpaw stance to confuse Tsunami.

With the loss, Tsunami, who failed in her fourth defense of the title she won in March 2018, dropped to 28 wins, including 16 KOs, against 13 defeats and a draw, while Estrada, 29, improved her unbeaten streak to 21 wins, eight by KO.
