World Boxing Association female flyweight champion Naoko Fujioka of Shinji Takehara and Takanori Hatakeyama Boxer Fitness Gym weighed in at 50.62 kg (111.6 lbs.) while World Boxing Council female flyweight champion Marlen Esparza of the United States tipped the scales at 50.53 kg (111.4 lbs.) on Apr. 8 in San Antonio, Texas in preparation for their title unification bout on Apr. 9 (10 Japan time) at Alamodome in the state.
It will be the 46-year-old Fujioka’s second straight championship fight in the U.S. as she retained the title for the third time last July in Los Angeles, California by decisioning Sulem Urbina of Mexico.
While Fujioka is Japan’s first and only five-division champion, Esparza, who is making her second title defense, is the 2012 London Olympics flyweight bronze medalist. Local odds showed Esparza, 32, is far superior to the veteran Japanese.
Fujioka has a record of 19 wins, including seven knockouts, against two defeats and a draw. Esparza has an 11-1 win-loss tally with one KO.
The main event of the day is popular undefeated former WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia’s first fight in one year and three months against Emmanuel Tagoe of Ghana.
