Tsutsumi retains Japan bantamweight title with TKO before next challenger Minamide

Oct 21, 2022 11:53 am

Champion Seiya Tsutsumi of Kadoebi Boxing Gym stopped seventh-ranked Kenshin Oshima of Teiken Boxing Gym in the ninth round to retain his Japanese bantamweight title on Oct. 20 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall.

It was the 26-year-old Tsutsumi’s first defense of the title he captured from Kyosuke Sawada of JB Sports Boxing Gym in June.

The technical knockout of the scheduled 10-rounder came 2 minutes and 42 seconds into the round when Tsutsumi dropped Oshima with a devastating counter right, prompting the referee to stop the fight without bothering to count.

While both fought almost evenly in the first half of the fight, it was Tsutsumi who stepped up his offence. In the ninth round, Tsutsumi unleashed a barrage of left and right combinations, staggering Oshima.

After the fight, Tsutsumi said, ‘’I was thinking only about coming into my own. I knew Mr. Oshima was a strong boxer. But given my fight today, I don’t think I can settle for my performance today.’’

With the victory, the undefeated Tsutsumi improved his record to seven wins, including six KOs, and two draws. For his part, Oshima fell to a 7-3-1 win-loss-draw tally with three KOs.

Earlier, top-ranked Japanese bantamweight Jin Minamide of CELES Sports Boxing Gym hammered out a unanimous decision over second-ranked Yuki Yonaha of Shinsei Boxing Gym in an eight-round nontitle bout and obtained the right to challenge Tsutsumi for the title. There were no knockdowns in the fight.

With the victory, the 27-year-old Minamide upped his record to seven wins, including five kos, against two losses, while the 31-year-old Yonaha impaired to a 12-4-1 win-loss-draw tally with 12 KOs.

Minamide stepped into the ring when Tsutsumi was making his comments on the ring and said provocatively, ‘’I am stronger (than Tsutsumi). Wait by shining the championship belt.’’

To this, Tsutsumi said, ’’It’s only sleep talking. But considering the content of my fight today, I can’t talk big. I hope to build up my confidence by beating Mr. Minamide.’’
